Licensed Practical Nurse - Special Education Aide

Qualifications:

  1. Possess a current license from Alabama Board of Nursing designating Licensed Practical Nurse.
  2. Must have a minimum of 48 semester hours of credit from a four-year accredited college and/or university or an associate’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  3. Current CPR card.
  4. Minimum of two (2) years experience in hospital or community health setting.
  5. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

Supervisor(s):

  1. Principal
  2. Assigned Teacher(s)
  3. Registered Nurse assigned to the School

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  1. Ability to observe and execute duties constant with that of the special education teacher.
  2. Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives relevant to instructional procedures and other classroom activities.
  3. Possession of effective skills in both oral and written communication to assist and compliment the special education teacher in program implementation.
  4. Physical ability needed to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.
  5. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
  6. Skilled in the use of testing and measurements for assessing vision, and other appropriate health screening activities and programs. (i.e.: Immunization Audits)
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and school faculties.
  8. Ability to use and implement computer technology programs including Microsoft Office and e-mail.
  9. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
  10. Be capable of moving and lifting moderately heavy weights.

Essential functions:

  1. Performs academic, therapeutic, and recreational tasks under the supervision of a certified special education teacher(s).
  2. Works with small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach, when necessary, material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
  3. Works with individual students who need special attention.
  4. Assists in the guidance of independent study, enrichment work, remedial help, and follow-up work as specified by the teacher(s).
  5. Assists the teacher(s) with students in rote memorization, reading and storytelling activities as appropriate.
  6. Assists the teacher(s) by checking student notebooks and daily written and oral assignments.
  7. Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties.
  8. Assists with preparing of instructional aids, bulletin boards and other learning displays.
  9. Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, break, personal hygiene/clothing needs, etc. as directed.
  10. Sets up and stores audio-visual equipment for classroom use.
  11. Escorts and supervises small groups who leave the classroom to do library work (under the supervision of the librarian).
  12. Assists with the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, physical education activities, off-campus excursions and testing.
  13. Maintains confidentiality of information as required by school policy.
  14. Maintains and exhibits a high level of ethical and professional standards as expected of all personnel.
  15. Participates in staff development activities and para-professional training as mandated by the State Department of Education.
  16. Providing nursing care for students requiring special health procedures.
  17. Referring parents, students, teachers, health agencies, and individuals for health counseling to the assigned RN.
  18. Maintaining proper and accurate documentation.
  19. Contacting principal and Health Services regarding crisis situations in the school. This includes child abuse, threatened suicide and accidents.
  20. Assisting students with medications according to approved procedures.
  21. Administering first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  22. Adheres to rules and regulations.
  23. Assists the RN in screening programs and school programs. (Spinal Screening, Vision Screening and Immunization Audit).
  24. Takes leave time in accordance with Board policy and reports all absences to SubFinder in a timely manner.
  25. Performs other related and equitable duties as may be assigned.

Terms of employment:

The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy Manual, Fair Dismissal Act of Alabama and the Board's Salary Schedule – Licensed Practical Nurse.

Evaluation:

Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel - GCRK and GCRK-R.SOURCE: Tuscaloosa City Schools, Tuscaloosa, Alabama
