Coordinator of Social Work
Qualifications:
- Alabama licensed social worker
- Masters degree in social work from a school of social
work accredited by the Council of Social Work Education
- Minimum of three years experience as a school social worker
- Valid Alabama drivers license
- Provide own or have access to appropriate transportation to
meet job requirements.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group
settings.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to organize, maintain, and report data and information
related to health and social services.
- Experience in supervision of licensed social workers.
- Knowledge of Board policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel,
and schools necessary for the efficient and effective processing
of communications.
- Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required
work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive
work environment.
Job goal:
To act as a liaison between school, home, and community to provide
prevention, assessment, intervention, and support services to enhance
academic, social, and emotional success.
Essential functions:
- Assists in counseling students whose behavior, school progress,
or mental or physical handicap or condition indicates need for
assistance.
- Works with the school counselor and other appropriate personnel
to enhance social development of individual members and provides
peer support in areas such as grief, stress, or chemical dependency.
- Conducts home visits and demonstrate ability to deal with confidential
and sensitive information in a professional manner.
- Helps students to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior
by increasing understanding of self, personal problems, and the
students part in creating them.
- Provides in-service training for social workers and other staff
members.
- Arranges for medical, psychiatric and other tests and examinations
that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial
measures.
- Coordinates crisis prevention/intervention activities for the
school district.
- Serves on the District Support Team.
- Serves on Elementary Alternative Staffing Committee.
- Program contact for the Alabama Medicaid Administrative Outreach
program
- Accesses the needs annually of community/school social services
for the following year and surveys the community in order to provide
an evaluation of such services as have been performed by the school
social worker during the previous year.
- Project Director for a three (3) year grant, Kids Involved in
Structured Support (K.I.S.S.).
- Assist building level administrators with the supervision of
social workers
- Serve as field instructor for social work interns.
- Represents Tuscaloosa City Schools on the following boards/committees:
- Childrens Policy Council
- Child Death Review Team
- Multi-disciplinary Team- Childrens Center
- Stillman College Work First Committee
- Community Mental Health Task Force
- Tuscaloosa Alternative Education Task Force
- Department of Human Resources Quality Assurance Review
- Foster Family Support Team
- Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
- Adheres to rules and regulations of the National Association
of Social Workers Code of Ethics and school board policy.
- Compile records and prepare reports as required.
- Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as
assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Terms of employment:
The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions
of the Boards Policy Manual, Alabama Teacher Tenure Act, Fair
Dismissal Act of Alabama and the Boards Salary Schedule
Coordinators for General Administration.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance
with provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Professional
Personnel.
