Plumber

Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Eight years of verified experience in the trade of which four years at the assistant level or equilalent. Or, verified proof of three years of assistant level experience or equivalent in a school system maintenance department in the relevant trade.
  3. Working knowledge of electricity and basic plumbing.
  4. Ability to perform limited welding.
  5. Possess a valid Alabama driver’s license.

Reports to:

Director of Facilities

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  1. Knowledge of tools, materials and methods to safely perform plumbing tasks.
  2. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  3. Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships and work as a member of a team.
  4. Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions and temperatures.
  5. Ability to climb and work from ladders or scaffolds.
  6. Ability and dexterity to perform all tasks including lifting, stooping, and bennding.

Duties and responsibilities are as follows:

1. Supervise subordinate skilled and unskilled workers in installing and maintaining heating and ventilating equipment, kitchen equipment and heating systems.

2. Start and operate complex compressor units.

3. Check and maintain generators, overhaul motors, temperature recorders, calibrate pressure gauges, meters, and similar devices; checking all indicating instruments periodically to know the functioning of each unit and minor electrical repair.

4. Consult with outside contractors and employees of other state agencies regarding design, alteration and repair, and purchase recommendations of mechanical equipment.

5. Establish operating standards and procedures for equipment within the limitations of assigned temperature requirements.

6. Perform limited welding tasks as needed.

7. Maintain daily maintenance logs and work reports indicating time and materials used.

8. Be responsible for all equipment, vehicles, tools, and other equipment.

9. Assist with the movement of portable classrooms.

10. Assist other trades in areas related to overall maintenance of the school system when assigned.

11. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Job goal:

To be responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating systems in the school system.
