Supervisor of Special Education
Job goal:
To assist with curriculum development and Individual Education
Plans.
Qualifications:
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university
with concentrated course work in special education.
- Advanced graduate work in education in the areas of curriculum
development, instructional practice.
- Certification in Administration/Supervision.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in areas of special education.
- Valid Alabama certification in Administration.
- Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure
under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board
may find appropriate and acceptable.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of curriculum development and special education law
and practices.
- Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group
settings.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to use effective public relations skills necessary for
the successful implementation of new programs, the coordination
of committees, and to maintain productive relationships among
colleagues and those supervised.
- Effective and efficient with Microsoft Office Programs such
as Word, Excel, Publisher and Access.
- Ability to communicate via E-mail efficiently and effectively.
- Knowledge and ability to use various forms of educational technology.
- Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required
work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive
work environment.
Essential functions:
- Assist in the implementation of special education programs,
including but not limited to the coordination of the development
of Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) for students referred
for special education services.
- Assists director and principals by providing leadership for
implementing IDEA through group and individual meetings.
- Assists director and principals in assessing instructional
needs of students.
- Assists director and principals with curriculum development.
- Works with special education teachers in writing Individual
Educational Plans (IEP).
- Acts as chairperson of the IEP team and tracks the process
from referral to placement.
- Regularly observes instructional programs and upon request
of principals, and assists teachers with improving their performance.
- Develops and conducts in-service workshops.
- Assist with evaluation and staff development of personnel as
required.
- Adheres to federal, state, local and board rules and regulations.
- Assists with other reasonable and equitable job duties assigned
by the immediate supervisor.
Terms of employment:
The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions
of the Board’s Policy Manual, Alabama Teacher Tenure Act,
and the Board’s Salary Schedule – Supervisors for Curriculum
and Instruction.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance
with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified
