SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers provide significant services to students by supplementing
the work of paid professional and paraprofessional staff, but are
not substitutes for paid staff. Typical assignments include the
reinforcement of instruction and assisting with non-instructional
student activities under the supervision of the professional staff.
the Volunteers in Education Program is the approved means of stimulating
and coordinating the services of qualified volunteers in the Tuscaloosa
City Schools. Lay citizens and parents provide the primary source
of volunteers.
The school volunteer coordinator and principal shall cooperatively
recruit, screen, direct pre-service orientation and supervise the
volunteers.
The assignment of volunteers shall be made by the coordinator
of volunteers with the concurrence of the school principal and the
cooperating teacher. A pre-service orientation program and regular
in-service training shall be provided by the coordinator or principal.
In recognition of their contributions to the welfare of students,
the superintendent shall award appropriate certificates at the end
of each school year. Individual schools are encouraged to plan proper
recognition for the services of the volunteers.
