MEDIA RELEASE

At-Risk Proposal

The Tuscaloosa City Board of Education announces the availability of at risk funds to all community agencies that offer services for children who are “at risk.” The Alabama legislation requires local school districts in Alabama to submit an at-risk plan to the State Superintendent of Education. Legislation pertaining to students who are at risk reads as follows:

It is the intent of the Alabama legislature that schools and school systems involve the community in planning and implementing at-risk programs. Therefore, school systems shall expend at least 20 percent of the at-risk funds to partner with non-profit and non-governmental community organizations in planning and implementing at-risk programs, which directly assist in improving academic performance. Such programs may include, but not be limited to, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, 21st Century Leadership, and local civic and charitable organizations.

The Tuscaloosa City School system is now accepting proposals from eligible community organizations to provide effective programming for students who may be at risk of not experiencing school success and are in danger of school failure and/or noncompletion. Please submit your proposals by August 30, 2005 to:
