American Studies

American Studies is a two-period course which pairs American Studies English and American Studies US History and Geography: 1877 to Present. Class content is arranged both chronologically and thematically. Just as America grew in the twentieth century from the progressive era and industrialization to the modern information age, students respond to some of the effects of America's changing landscape on the lives of America's diverse people.

Students participate in group activities in which they explore historic sites in Tuscaloosa, write skits about their research and perform them for elementary school students. They explore American culture as they learn to square dance and study American art and architecture. During the farm unit, students participate in farm simulations in which they till the soil and plant a garden. Students travel to New York City and Birmingham during the city unit to visit museums, watch Broadway shows, and soak up American culture in an urban setting.

This nationally recognized program is offered at all high schools. For more information on the American Studies program, please contact your school’s counselor.
