National Board Certification

  • The Tuscaloosa City Schools has a strong commitment to professional development. As part of the TCS Strategic Plan, the system is dedicated to growing accomplished teaching through individualized professional learning opportunities, including the development of a comprehensive National Board Certification support system.

    These supports include the following:

    • Membership in a small cohort. New cohorts begin each year.
    • Mentoring and cohort leadership by TCS teachers who currently hold National Board Certification
    • Release time for cohort work and collaboration
    • Financial supports for costs associated with certification

Teachers holding Board Certification in Math, Science, Language Arts, Literacy and Career & Technical Education will be eligible for a $5,000 stipend from the state (in addition to the $5,000 stipend provided all NBCTs employees in an Alabama school district) upon employment in a "high needs" school. Contact Human Resources for a list of schools that currently apply or check job postings.

Certified employees of Westlawn Middle School holding Board Certification or participating in the certification process are eligible for benefits in addition to those provided all teachers in the district. These include (but are not limited to) transfer bonuses or bonuses for submission of National Board components. More information about the WMS One School One Focus Program is available here.
