University Place Elementary & Middle schools
An education focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics for grades K-8
At University Place Elementary School (UPES) and University Place Middle School (UPMS), the mission is “Growing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” through a project-based curriculum and leadership-based culture.
UPES and UPMS students learn by “doing”. Students literally construct their own meaning of ideas and apply their knowledge. They build models, conduct experiments, and create presentations to demonstrate their understanding of a particular concept or idea. Student projects are afforded a high level of authenticity through a garden program, a LEGO lab, and state-of-the-art technology including a 3D printer.
The hands-on philosophy also applies to the schools’ renowned leadership program. UPES is the original Leader in Me school of the TCS. In 2013, the school received the prestigious Lighthouse School designation in recognition of the active role that students play in developing a culture of leadership. UPES and UPMS students hold school-wide jobs, organize and run events, and perform acts of service in the local community.
