Dear Families,
Tuscaloosa City Schools is committed to bringing unique learning opportunities to our students and we are pleased to introduce a free reading service providing digital books through Sora, the new student reading app from OverDrive/Libby.
Why Rakuten OverDrive/Libby?
The OverDrive collection is an extension of Tuscaloosa City Schools’ physical libraries, only it’s online with 24/7 access to ebooks and audiobooks. It’s convenient for students to check out titles at home, on the weekends or during school breaks with no worry about misplacing a book or running up late fees – these digital titles automatically return at the end of the lending period! Sora also allows students to check out ebooks and audiobooks from Tuscaloosa Public Library using their school credentials.
OverDrive can help students of all ages read more and improve comprehension. Struggling or reluctant readers, learning-challenged, second language learners, and gifted readers can all benefit from this service.
- Enrich vocabulary and improve comprehension and pronunciation
- Introduce students to books above their reading level
- Teach critical listening
- Help busy kids find time to read
- Incentivize reading with fun avatars and achievements in the Sora app
How does it work?
To use OverDrive, students can browse our digital collection in the Sora app or by going to http://soraapp.com, borrow with their school Clever credentials, and enjoy anytime, anywhere on a computer, tablet, smartphone or eReader.
How does my student connect to Tuscaloosa Public Library?
Once you’re signed into Sora, go to your profile (the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner) and select “Add a public library.” Search by name or ZIP code. The first time you attempt to checkout a book or place a hold, you’ll be prompted to login. Use your school Clever credentials to sign into the public library.
Where can I find more information?
Please contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Amy Davis, Librarian
