The Tuscaloosa City Schools Authorizing Office envisions a diverse portfolio of high-quality public charter schools that foster innovation, close achievement gaps, and prepare students for success in college, career, and life. We are committed to authorizing schools that:

Areas of Academic Need

Tuscaloosa City Schools has identified the following areas of academic need within our district:

  • Closing Achievement Gaps:

    • Significant disparities exist between special education and general education students, particularly in literacy and numeracy.

    • Academically vulnerable students and English Language Learners require additional support to meet academic standards.

  • Enhancing STEM Education:

    • Increased focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to prepare students for future careers.

  • Providing "Things of Value":

    • Offering students additional benefits beyond credits and state-required basic education, including college credits, credentials, and resume-worthy experiences

Timeline for Charter Schools opening in 2026-2027

Tuscaloosa City Schools' Charter application process opens on September 1 of each year with the release of a Request for Proposals. Detailed information about the application process and instructions for applying will be posted at that time. We encourage all interested parties to watch this space for that information.
