Rigorous Academic Offerings

Student studying in class

Academic rigor is about the quality of teaching and learning. At an academically-rigorous school, students feel both success and challenge on a daily basis. Academic rigor is also about the level of opportunity we give students to take their learning beyond what we do in the classroom. Tuscaloosa City Schools strives for innovative and rigorous learning opportunities for all students. All three high schools have close partnerships with local post-secondary institutions, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school. Advanced Placement (AP) is a program created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. AP gives students the chance to tackle college-level work while they're still in high school and earn college credit and placement. AP opportunities are available at all three Tuscaloosa City Schools High Schools.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers a continuum of international education. The programs encourage both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in their studies and in their personal development. In order to teach IB programmes, schools must be authorized. When authorized, they become known as an IB World School. Tuscaloosa City Schools is proud to offer the Primary Years Programme (grades 1-5), Middle Years Programme (grades 6-10) and Diploma Programme as part of the IB continuum.
