Reading Allies
Would you like to volunteer to tutor and have a positive impact on students in the Tuscaloosa City Schools? Reading Allies needs you THIS WEEK! Volunteers are needed for the next session of tutoring, which begins this week and runs through April 24. Register below!
Reading Allies began in 2017 through a collaborative effort between the University of Alabama Honors College, the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club, and the Tuscaloosa City Schools. Combining the resources of school systems, businesses, corporations, foundations, civic groups, and individuals, Reading Allies mobilizes the Tuscaloosa community to work one-on-one with striving readers to bring students up to grade level. The program now operates in 12 Tuscaloosa City and County Schools.
Lasting 10 weeks each semester, a skilled Reading Allies Specialist develops personalized lessons for each student, which are taught in 30-minute sessions by trained volunteer tutors. Volunteers go through a comprehensive Reading Allies training session where they learn literacy best practices and how to effectively work with a striving reader.
