Character education is important in the Tuscaloosa City Schools, as it prepares our students for life & career success, while also making our schools a better place to work and study.
Since 2022, four TCS schools have been named a National School of Character by Character.org: Westlawn Middle, Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools Elementary, Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools Middle and Skyland Elementary. All of those schools plus Oakdale Elementary have been named Schools of Character for the state of Alabama.
In addition to our character recognitions, TCS partners with Townsquare Media and Child Abuse Prevention Services to award one student in each school annually with the "Inspiring Excellence" award to recognize students who are exude qualities of good character with their peers.
