Across the country, schools are facing a shortage of special education teachers. The Tuscaloosa City Schools is taking action — creating new pathways, offering meaningful incentives and building strong support systems to attract and retain educators who are ready to make an impact.

Competitive pay and incentives

Special education teachers in TCS receive a $5,000 annual supplement, along with additional stipends for educators, including paraprofessionals, working in high-need settings.

Built-in support and mentorship

New teachers receive hands-on support from day one, including orientation, mentoring and ongoing professional learning designed specifically for special education classrooms.

Teachers are given a dedicated day each month to focus on planning, individualized instruction and student support — helping reduce workload stress and improve outcomes.
