Superintendent Search

The Tuscaloosa City Schools has launched a search for its next superintendent, beginning a formal process to identify the district's next leader. The position is now posted, and applications will be accepted through January 16, 2026.
The search follows the announcement that current superintendent Dr. Mike Daria will retire on June 30, 2026, after more than 30 years of service to the Tuscaloosa City Schools. Under his leadership, TCS has experienced significant academic progress, where third-grade reading proficiency rose from 32 percent in 2014 to 90 percent in 2025, the district improved from a C to a B on the state report card, and college and career readiness increased from 30 percent to 96 percent over the last decade.
Board Chair Eric Wilson said the upcoming leadership transition marks an important moment for the school system.
“Finding the right superintendent is one of the most important responsibilities we have as a Board,” Wilson said. “Over the last eight years under Dr. Mike Daria, our system has made tremendous progress. We are committed to selecting a leader who can build on that success, support our students and staff, and guide TCS into its next chapter with integrity and vision.”
The Board has outlined a clear timeline for the search. Applications will be accepted from December 1 through January 16, 2026. Candidate interviews are scheduled for January 26–30, and the Board expects to name the next superintendent on February 2, 2026. The new superintendent is expected to begin duties on May 1, 2026.
