Specialized Offerings

The Tuscaloosa City Schools is pleased to participate in a variety of programs designed to encourage student attendance and improve student engagement. The following programs are grant-funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) mean breakfasts, snacks and lunches for many of our students at no cost.

Breakfast in the Classroom

Thanks to a three-year grant award, the Tuscaloosa City Schools is able to offer school breakfasts to students at 14 schools. By participating in this USDA-funded program, breakfast is served in the classroom prior to the start of the instructional day. This program encourages daily student attendance. In many cases, the Breakfast in the Classroom program fosters a sense of community as students eat breakfast with their classmates while working on social skills. Community Eligibility Provision

In an effort to help increase attendance, as well as academic achievement, the Tuscaloosa City Schools applied for a grant to provide school breakfasts and lunches at no charge to students at some schools. The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a provision from the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that allows schools and school systems with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students. CEP eliminates the burden of collecting household applications to determine eligibility for school meals.
