Learn more about Northington Elementary School
Northington Elementary School (NES) serves approximately 445 students in grades pre-K through 5th grade. We are located among businesses, shopping plazas, apartments and a public park that is adjacent to the school. The school’s body is unique, in that it is comprised of many ethnic groups with African-Americans and Hispanics making up the highest percentage. NES has the second largest English Learners (EL) population in the Tuscaloosa City School District. Our school fosters a student-centered environment that puts academic success at its core. Northington has a thoughtful and systematic approach to dealing with the needs of all students. Decisions are made in the best interest of the students and we operate with a common belief of “keeping the children first.” Northington provides personalized instruction based on student needs, utilization of technology available to enhance instruction, and collaboration among grade levels to implement research-based strategies to foster critical thinking and improve student learning.
Nurturing EnvironmentOur staff is dedicated to fostering student self-worth, confidence and their ability to excel academically and socially. Students are supported by caring teachers who implement research-based strategies to meet students where they are to catapult them to their highest potential. Our PBIS program provides students with a safe and supportive environment where they are encouraged to be thoughtful, caring and compassionate individuals who respect the differences of others.
Parental EnvironmentWe value and encourage a high level of collaboration between the school and the home. We celebrate the diversity of our families with a variety of programs such as cultural festivals, resource fairs and family-centered activities. Our Parent Teacher Association supports the NES family and has positively impacted our community. We value parental input and strive to maintain a core group of parents who work alongside our decision-making teams.
Award WinnersNorthington has received the Safe School Initiative Award from the Attorney General’s Office as well as the High Flying School Award from Georgia Southern University. Our teachers have applied for and received a number of school grants to improve student achievement and foster creativity. Our teachers have also been awarded many projects through Donors Choose.
Valuable PartnershipsNES has a very supportive and involved Adopt-A-School partner in Cadence Bank. They provide support to our school in many ways (classroom readers, school art exhibitions, test incentives, etc.). We also have special community partners such as Capstone Church, who provide a generous amount of support for our students, families and teachers. The Capstone Church provides incentives for students receiving special awards at the end of each grading period, tutoring, duty free lunch for teachers and hosted our yearly Fall Festival. We have also worked with JOANN Fabrics and Crafts, Belk and Target who have donated their time and money to support the educational welfare of each student at Northington.
