TMSE is also a National School of Character where we live by our Core Values; respect; critical thinking, principled, caring and integrity. An academic magnet school, the Tuscaloosa Magnet School delivers an inquiry-based curriculum to students in grades one through five from each of the other 12 elementary programs in the system. In addition to a rigorous academic program, students are engaged in school-wide enrichment with opportunities to experience service learning, interest-based clubs, foreign language instruction, the fine arts and an award-winning physical education program.

  • Diverse Population

The Tuscaloosa Magnet School delivers instruction to 300 children from all 12 elementary programs. Diversity is a strength at TMSE with over 50 nationalities represented in our student population and a variety of races, ethnicities, languages, beliefs and backgrounds.

  • Foreign Languages

TMSE is the only elementary school in the system that offers foreign language instruction. Students in all grades attend Spanish classes twice weekly where they learn to read, write and speak Spanish through a hands-on model called Total Physical Response.

  • Strong Partnerships

TMSE loves its community partners! Through a weekly community partnership program, students in all grades are exposed to myriad opportunities for learning topics based on student interest. Some partnership student favorites include yoga, anthropology, chess, creative writing and more.

  • Taking Action

As a major component to IB, TMSE students go beyond classroom learning by taking action in their community. With classroom-initiated projects throughout the year as well as opportunities for student-initiated action, students are consistently encouraged to become compassionate, globally-minded learners.
