Meet the Assistant Principal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School

  • Welcome back for another wonderful year at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School!  I am Dannon Bedwell.  I am honored to have the opportunity to work with the students, parents, and staff of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School and the Tuscaloosa Community. There are many exciting things happening at MLK Elementary that will certainly have a positive impact on student growth and achievement.  For the past ten years, I have enjoyed the privilege of working with students as a physical education teacher and assistant principal. This is my third year serving our MLK students as the assistant principal. Time truly does fly when you are having fun! This year at MLK, we are "Moving our Bus" towards excellence! Ron Clark said it best, " In life we have riders, walkers, joggers, and runners. Fuel the runners".

My primary objective as the assistant principal is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all students so that we may improve academically through the excellent instruction and the numerous activities made available to students.

At MLK, we believe the greatness of our scholars lies within them. As a member of faculty and staff, it is our job to cultivate INTELLIGENCE, CHARACTER, and PERSEVERANCE in each child. The characteristics below describe the MLK Way and how our students work to achieve it.

    • Intelligence: Our children read, learn and solve problems
    • Character: Our children are good people who do good things.
    • Perseverance: When our children face challenges, they do not give up. They push through their challenges.

Also at MLK, we use the motto, “YOU MATTER”. When we say “YOU MATTER”, everyone matters. This means our community, parents, students, teachers, and administrators all matter. It truly takes everyone to make sure that our students are successful academically. “YOU MATTER” also shows that our implementation of Social Emotional Learning is also an important aspect of the academic success of our students.

If you have a concern, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.  Not only are we here to nurture and educate our children, it is also our role to offer support to our students' parents.  Please feel free to follow us on Twitter, view updated information posted on our school website, our school social media account, and visit us at school.  I look forward to meeting many of you during our upcoming school year.
