New Heights
New Heights Community Resource Center
New Heights Community Resource Center is one of the first facilities of its kind in Alabama. Tuscaloosa City Schools has partnered with local service agencies to create a one-stop wrap-around service center for TCS students, their families, and the greater Tuscaloosa community. The 12 community partners housed within the facility include: Tuscaloosa Latino Coalition, Disability Rights and Resources, Five Horizons Health, READY of Tuscaloosa, Literacy Council of West Alabama, Tuscaloosa Reads, Kristen Amerson Youth Foundation, and Indian Rivers Behavior Health and Parents as Teachers. Additionally, West Alabama Food Bank and Schoolyard Roots will provide goods and services on site. New Heights also hosts an on-site, after-school program with the YMCA-Benjamin Barnes Branch during the school year and summer.
Our partners provide mental health and wellness services, drug and alcohol abuse prevention services, home modifications and transition services, disability support services, homelessness prevention services, food distribution, suicide prevention, literacy training, and tutoring and mentorships, among other needed services.
The Lift, a no-cost necessities shop for students and families referred by TCS social workers is housed at New Heights as well. Food, toiletries, bedding, cleaning products, school supplies, home goods, and more are available at no cost. Brand new clothing, shoes, and accessories are also available in a boutique setting.
New Heights is home to TCS’s International Welcome Center. Families are greeted by our bilingual receptionist upon arrival. Our ESL/Bilingual Social Worker provides intake and enrollment services while also working with families to assess unmet needs in their native language. Spanish-speaking families are easily connected with our community partners during their enrollment process to ensure access to wrap-around services.
As New Heights grows, community programming will be offered by our partners, as well as outside agencies. Dreams for New Heights include an accessible community playground, a community garden, adult literacy and GED classes, nutrition and cooking classes, tutoring, and additional programming for youth.
