 Red Ribbon Week October is National Bullying Prevention Month

&

RED RIBBON WEEK
October 22 – October 26

OVERALL THEME:  Life is a Journey. Travel Drug Free!

 

Red Ribbon Week has been set aside to bring awareness to the very serious problem of Drug Abuse.

 

We have a sub-theme for each day of the week:

Monday- “Put a Cap on Drugs and Bullying.”(Everyone wears hats and caps.)

Tuesday- “Black Out Drugs and Bullying” (Everyone wears black.)

Wednesday – “Anti-Bullying Unity Day” (Everyone wears orange.)

Thursday- “Red All Over” (Everyone wears red.)

Friday- “Team Up Against Drugs and Bullying” (Everyone wears jerseys or t-shirts.)

 

Each day we will name three things we can do instead of drugs, and give a Drug Fact.

 

MONDAY (October 22nd)

Sub-theme: “Put a Cap on Drugs and Bullying.”(Everyone wears hats and caps.)

** All Students will get Red Ribbon Week stickers!

Three things we can do today instead of drugs are:

  1. Visit with friends
  2. Play video games
  3. Play a sport

 

Drug Fact: Each year, tobacco kills over 400,000 Americans.  Tobacco contains nicotine, which is believed to be the deadliest and most addictive substance on the planet.  One cigar has as much nicotine as almost 3 packs of cigarettes!

Sign of Addiction: Neglecting Other Activities- Spending less time on activities that used to be important (hanging out with family and friends, exercising, pursuing goals and hobbies); drop in attendance and performance at work or school.

 

TUESDAY (October 23rd)

Sub-theme:  “Black Out Drugs and Bullying” (Everyone wears Black)

** 7th Graders will get Red Ribbon Week Bookmarks!

Three things we can do today instead of drugs are:

  1. Do something kind for someone today
  2. Go to the park
  3. Ride a bike

 

Drug Fact: Marijuana is a drug that makes your heart beat up to 50% faster and contains over 400 chemicals.  It causes problems with memory, learning, and problem solving skills.  It also causes loss of motor coordination and distorted perception of sights, sounds, time, and touch.  Additionally, it causes long-term problems such as cancer in the lungs, mouth, and airways, and can also weaken the immune system.

Sign of Addiction: Relationship Issues- People struggling with addiction are known to act out against those closest to them, particularly if someone is attempting to address their substance problems; complaints from co-workers, supervisors, teachers or classmates.

 

 

WEDNESDAY (October 24th)

Sub-theme:  “Anti-Bullying Unity Day” (Everyone wears Orange.)

*Make It Orange and Make It End!*

 

Three things we can do today instead of Bullying and Drugs:

  1. Make friends with someone you don’t know at school
  2. Challenge others and yourself to be kind to someone today
  3. Stand up for others; Be an Up-stander for someone today

 

The effects of Bullying are Serious!!  Students are afraid to come to school. Some students turn into bullies themselves.  And, some students begin to feel bad about themselves. HALT can help because we are “Working and Learning Together,” Everyone is seeking a culture of Peace and Safety, Everyone is becoming responsible school citizen, and enjoying coming to school!!

 

Mr. Hines will lead us in the HALT Pledge and we will sign the HALT Pledge Commitment

THURSDAY (October 25th)

Sub-theme:  “Red All Over” (Everyone wears Red.) Aware!  “Not Just for a Week, but for a lifetime.”

 

Three things we can do today instead of drugs:

  1. Listen to music
  2. Play with a pet
  3. Read a magazine

 

Drug Fact: Alcohol is the number one abused drug in both the United States and the world.  Alcohol kills more people than all other drugs and causes problems such as impaired judgment, loss of balance, and blurred vision.  Long term damages include liver damage and fatal alcohol poisoning.

Sign of Addiction: Secrecy- Going out of one’s way to hide the amount of drugs or alcohol consumed or one’s activities when drinking or drugging; unexplained injuries or accidents

** 6th Graders will receive Red Ribbons!!

 

FRIDAY (October 26th)

Sub-theme:  “Team Up Against Drugs” (Everyone wears team jerseys or t-shirts)

 

Three things we can do today instead of drugs:

  1. Enjoy a hobby
  2. Watch a favorite TV show
  3. Go bowling with family and/or friends

               

Drug Fact: Cocaine is a drug that can cause heart attacks, lung damage, chest pains, erratic heartbeat, seizures, and death.

Sign of Addiction: Family History- A family history of addiction can dramatically increase one’s predisposition to substance abuse.
