TCS Invites Community Members to Superintendent's Open House
The Tuscaloosa City Schools will host a Superintendent’s Open House with Dr. Mike Daria on Monday, Aug. 29, to connect with the community about the direction of the system. The event is set for The Alberta School of Performing Arts from 5:30-7:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 6 p.m.
Parents, teachers and community members can learn about the district’s implementation of the strategic plan directly from administrators tasked with implementing the plan in a science-fair style. An extended evening learning camp will be provided for students in grades kindergarten through eight to participate in interactive, hands-on activities for free as parents visit the following stations:
- Meet with the Superintendent
- Human Resources
Additionally, staff will be on-hand to connect with families of English Language Learners in Spanish.
Daria said he hopes this type of event will help the system better engage with families.
“One way we can do that is to make sure that a parent who wants to attend and doesn’t have childcare isn’t prevented from attending,” he said. “The lack of childcare shouldn’t be a barrier from understanding how this plan will benefit students.”
Families who will have children participating in the extended evening learning camp are asked to arrive early to register students. Activities for K-3 students include the following: a Lego Lab, play time at the new playground, arts activities and a homework station. Students in grades 4-8 will participate in a tech camp at The Gateway located next to TASPA. Snacks will be provided for all students.
The Gateway Innovation & Discovery Center at Alberta is a state-of-the-art facility designed to connect residents of all ages with interactive learning experiences.
The Superintendent's Open House will be Daria's first community meeting since being named superintendent earlier this summer. The Alberta School of Performing Arts is located at 2700 University Blvd. E. For more information, visit www.tuscaloosacityschools.com
