Central High School administrators collaborate
 
 
For the first time since 2013, Central High School has no label attached. It's a moniker CHS teachers, students and staff have been working hard to shed. Earlier today, the Alabama State Department of Education released what is called the "Failing Schools List" as required by the Alabama Accountability Act (AAA). School leaders implemented strong academic plans, elevated expectations for students, and placed strong commitments to excellence.

The above photograph, taken on the first day of school this year, highlighted the CHS principal's determination to prove that the school's students are capable of greatness.

"Being removed from this list confirms that the hard work of our students, faculty, staff and community has not gone unnoticed." said Clarence Sutton, Jr. "Central High School strives to be an example for schools that through hard work, collaboration, communication, and belief that their students can be successful. We are committed to continuing the work that we have started."

The hard work is paying off, too, at Paul W. Bryant High School where the school's efforts moved it from its place on the 2018 edition of the list.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Daria highlighted the significance of today's announcement.

"We feel certain that the AAA is in their past and they are on their way to becoming the premier schools that we envision for all TCS schools and our system," he said.

Meanwhile, PWBHS principal Lydia Edwards said the school is excited to have this label removed from the school’s name.

"We continue to focus on practices that require a mind shift in practices to meet the needs of our students," said Edwards. "We have not arrived at the goal, Stampede TRANSFORMATION continues in our classrooms."

Despite the effort of teachers and staff at Westlawn Middle School this year, the school was cited on the list. Daria is quick to point out that WMS is not a failing school and the school has the full backing of the system to continue on its current path to success.

"We have incredible teachers serving bright and brilliant children. WMS has worked feverishly to put a strong academic and student support plan in place," he said. "We will begin to see academic gains in a short time as a result of their plan, passion, and commitment."

Principal Dr. Tiffany Davis agreed, saying WMS students made 82 percent growth in the areas of reading and math on the new state report card.

"Our school will NOT be defined by this list, and we will not rest until every child is performing at or above expectations," said Davis. "We are making extraordinary growth as we continue to close the learning and achievement gaps for all students."
