Nearly a dozen Tuscaloosa Career & Technology Academy students took top honors in a recent state media competition. The students participated in the Alabama Scholastic Press Association’s annual broadcast competition where students competed with others from around the state producing pieces as individuals and in teams during its virtual convention.
TCTA offers a television productions academy under the direction of veteran journalist Isaiah Harper. The instructor said this group of students had to overcome challenges to their academic schedule in light of the pandemic.
“We had an uphill battle starting the first semester completely virtual and staggered second semester. It gave our competitors who started back to school in-person a jumpstart, said Harper. “But, we met on days students didn’t have to be on campus.”
As a result, TCTA students won 20 awards in all, even sweeping the sportscast competition.
