June 18, 2021 Earlier today, Governor Kay Ivey's order deemed June 18 to be a state holiday in observance of Juneteenth. While the Tuscaloosa City Schools intends to observe the holiday and incorporate it into our academic calendar, we are concerned that announcing a closure at this point it in evening will have an impact on the families of Summer Learning Academy participants who would need to make alternate arrangements for tomorrow. The Governor's order does allow "time off as soon thereafter as possible," if it is necessary for an employee to work on the new federal holiday. In keeping with this, TCS will recognize this holiday by providing time-off for our summer employees or the equivalent of time off and will also review our calendar for 2022. The Tuscaloosa City Schools will be operational tomorrow and will run all of its offices and Summer Learning Academies. In a future communication to our employees, we will provide the methods for allowing time off for our employees to observe this holiday. Any parent who wishes to have their children observe the holiday tomorrow may certainly do so by not having their child attend summer learning.
