Jennifer Smith said she always knew she wanted to be a school social worker, it just took her some years in her career to get there. After 17 years working for DHR and other agencies, Smith came to work at Northridge Middle School and Verner Elementary since 2022 and said she is loving the opportunity to make a positive impact on students there. 

 

"I always knew I wanted to be a school social worker one day," Smith said. "I love it. I like working with kids, and what I like about working in a school is that we get to be that middle ground. We can help students directly and reach out." 

 

 

One instance of that happened recently, when a student at NMS who is in a wheelchair had a strap come loose, which made it unsafe for the student to ride home on the school bus unsecured. Thankfully, Smith noticed and took action to get the issue fixed. Her initiative was not unnoticed by her coworkers, who submitted an "Everyday Amazing" shoutout, recognizing her for her efforts.

 

"I consider it a privilege to serve families alongside our kind-hearted, student advocating, #AmazingtotheCore social worker, Jennifer Smith," wrote ESL Specialist Angie Morrizon. "While her student successes are too numerous to count, her most recent relentless accomplishment was ensuring a student's wheelchair was repaired rapidly so that she could access bus transportation safely. Ms. Smith does an exceptional job building relationships with all stakeholders and meeting the ongoing multifaceted needs of families and students. We are fortunate to have social workers in our schools and I am thankful to work with Ms. Smith!"
