A familiar face returns home to Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Middle. The Board of Education named Constance Pewee-Childs as the next principal of TMS-M. Pewee-Childs is a veteran educator who has served as a language arts teacher, a counselor, summer learning program facilitator, and an assistant principal.
She began her career with Tuscaloosa City Schools as a professional counselor with the school she has been selected to lead in 2009. During her eight-year tenure with the school, she designed and implemented the counseling program for both Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Elementary and Middle.
Pewee-Childs noted that the fact the two schools share a facility is a plus to helping students be successful.
"I love to see the growth of a student from sixth grade to eighth grade, but at TMS-M, it'll be you know way more than that, " said Pewee-Childs. "From first grade in the hallway all the way to eighth grade-- I love to see the growth or the impact that I have had or the teachers I've had on the student."
Superintendent Dr. Mike Daria said the evidence of strong leadership instructional leadership, commitment to TCS, and student-centered focus made her the right choice for the school.
"She has proven herself as a teacher, counselor and administrator with compassion, and integrity," he said. "Mrs. Pewee-Childs has a strong desire to make sure each and every child is successful."
The new principal is clear about what she wants to see out of the school: "a school that has rigor--you have hard-working teachers, you have students that are working hard and being challenged and thinking outside the box, helping the community--actually living the IB lifestyle," she said. "When you walk in our building, you should see that we're an IB school should feel it!"
