TCS Track & Field Athletes Achieve Excellence

A new Board of Education marked its first meeting Tuesday and started its tenure celebrating the achievements of a group of track and field athletes from Northridge and Paul W. Bryant High schools.

Northridge High School brought home the blue map at the recent AHSAA Class 6A Girls' Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Gulf Shores with a team championship. Members of the team also netted top-three finishes in multiple individual categories: Khadira Gipson, Alana Green, Olivia Johnson, and Skylar Wilson (4x100 meter Relay first place); Rashni Walker set a new 6A state record in the 100m Hurdles and also in the 300m Hurdle State Champion; Mary Mac Collins earned second-place honors in the 800-Meter and 3200-Meter Runs as well as a third-place finish in the 1600-Meter Run. Walker and Gipson finished first and third respectively in the 100-Meter hurdles with Walker also winning the 300-Meter hurdles. Leah Dendy had a second-place finish in pole vault; Walker finished second in long jump and Gibson rounded out the top three in triple jump.

The Northridge girls' team also won the state indoor championship in its classification earlier this year; both teams are led by coaches Jeff Sparks, Bob Brantley, Tim Thomas, Jeffrey Walker, and Alicia Ware.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Daria presented Sparks with the Achieving Excellence Award last night for his incredible indoor/outdoor track and cross country career history. During his time working for the Tuscaloosa City Schools, Sparks has produced 11 state track championships and 20 second-place team finishes and five cross country sectional championships. Under his leadership, there have been 73 individual state champions and 11 relay team state champions.

NHS's Tommy Danner also won a state shot put championship in the boys' division.

Two Paul W. Bryant High School athletes were also celebrated Tuesday night. Amaria Bankhead finished second in the 100-Meter hurdles and Lilliann Dudley is the Girls 6A shot put champion. The PWBHS team is led by coaches Deon Irby and Sharday Branch.
